Southern Hill Cemetery

Originally “The Colored Cemetery,” in the Forest Hill neighborhood in Gadsden, the cemetery was established in 1826 by John W. Slack. It served as the first and largest African American cemetery in Gadsden until 1918, when the Mosaic Templars of America built a smaller cemetery on the grounds. Southern Hill, also known as “6th Street Cemetery,” was the final resting place for people of all backgrounds and cares for the final resting places of the enslaved, laborers, business owners, and soldiers from the Civil War to the Korean War. The cemetery’s preservation work is managed by Grace Heritage Community Foundation.
