First Missionary Baptist Church Decatur

First Missionary Baptist Church of Decatur was established in 1866 in northwest Alabama by 21 former slaves in the home of Ms. Jane Young under the leadership of the Rev. Alfred Peters. In 1873, under the leadership of Rev. Crawford Peters, the church purchased its first sanctuary and in 1895, began the construction of a larger church. In 1921, renowned architect Wallace A. Rayfield designed and constructed the current structure for $1,250—money raised by the working-class congregation. In the 1930s, the church was the meeting place for the defense attorneys representing The Scottsboro Boys.
