Federation of Southern Cooperatives Rural Training and Research Center

The Federation of Southern Cooperatives (FSC) was established in 1967 as means to create a network of African American farming cooperatives across the South. In 1971, the FSC purchased 73 acres of land near Epes, Alabama to become a central location for operations and training for farmers. The property included a pond, pump house, a hunting cabin built in 1945, and in 1972 additions were made by the FSC. Farmers coming to the training center then had access to new offices, a print shop, a cafeteria/auditorium, and could stay on the property dormitory. Here, farmers could train in new skills, prepare for certifications required for better jobs, and learn how to combat systemic discrimination and exploitative practices.
